We are a research team from Indiana University Bloomington, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Florida, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, and University of Montana. We are studying how irrigation water is used across the United States by combining satellite information with reports from farmers.
Goals
There is limited information about irrigation water use at the field level in the United States. Because of this, it is difficult to check the accuracy of irrigation estimates created from satellite data and other tools. Most current estimates are based on models rather than direct reports from crop producers, which can leave gaps in understanding when, where, and how much water is applied to crops.
As weather patterns and rainfall become less predictable, irrigation plays an increasingly important role in crop production. Better information about irrigation water use can help producers, researchers, and water managers understand agricultural water needs and make informed decision about water resources. By combining satellite information with data provided by crop producers, this project aims to improve irrigation maps and support water management in agriculture.
Tasks
If you are a farmer, we invite you to complete a survey each day you irrigate a field. The information you provide will help build a public dashboard that shows irrigation trends by region.
We will also share project updates with participants.
To protect privacy, all submitted data will be anonymized and combined other responses before it is displayed or analyzed.
As a participant of this project, you will: 1) Receive feedback on your irrigation practices that may help you use water more efficiently. 2) Access field level maps and information based on satellite data for your fields. 3) Learn about ways to reduce irrigation costs while maintaining crop production outputs. 4) Support efforts to improve water management for agriculture in your community and across the United States.
